Why Ultrasound?
Medically confirm that you are pregnant. Pregnancy tests can detect hCG levels from a recent miscarriage. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can determine if you are pregnant with a viable pregnancy and detect a heartbeat.
Ensure the pregnancy is in your uterus, and not ectopic (outside of uterus). Ectopic pregnancies can be life threatening and usually require medical intervention. The abortion pill does not work on ectopic pregnancies.
Measure how far along you are. You cannot go by your last menstrual cycle to know this for sure. Only ultrasound can tell you this. Abortion pills are even more risky and less effective further in pregnancy. Ex: increased risk of heavy bleeding, infection, and incomplete abortion.
Protect your health - especially if you are considering abortion. Taking a few hours to get an ultrasound could reveal to you that your baby has already passed, save you from a life-threatening fallopian tube rupture from a missed ectopic pregnancy, and warn you against taking the pill too far along in pregnancy.
